4-30-12 Keyote!Our social group for young adults with disabilities is having a fundraiser to support our group activities.  We are selling tickets to this Sunday’s Key Game — April 7, 2013,  2pm start time.  These tickets will also be good for any Monday through Thursday (non-fireworks) game for the rest of the season.  These general admission tickets would cost $9 in advance or $11 if purchased the same day at the stadium.  Buy them from us and save $3-5 each!

Australian Dot Paintings at November 2012 Outing

The Teachable Moments Adult Social Group met on November 30, 2012, to learn how to create Australian Dot Paintings.  Visiting art instructor, Dana McBee, guided them through the process and some very beautiful paintings were created.  Members had a great time and also enjoyed some socializing activities and snacks.  New members are always welcome.  Please contact Carol Custer for more information at 301-788-6198 or carol@custerllc.com.

Adult Social Group at Crumland Farm

Members of the Teachable Moments Adult Social Group met on October 13 at Crumland Farms in Frederick.  This was the third year in a row for the popular outing.  Members navigated the corn maze and participated in the games and activities at the Farm, including pedal go-carts, giant slides, and the corn cannon.  They were also able to select a pumpkin to take home.  The social group supports young adults with developmental disabilities by meeting once each month for a variety of activities and socializing at various locations around the Frederick area.    In the past year they have gone to Adventure Park, shopping and laser tag at the FSK Mall, bowling, and much more.  For information about future outings, please contact Carol Custer at 301-788-6198.

Sports Day Outing of Social Group

August Busy for Social Group

     On August 20, six members of the Teachable Moments Social Group attended a double-header Keys game.  We got a little wet, but had a great time!

     On August 27, eleven members of the group attended a bowling outing at the Seven Ten Bowling Center in Hagerstown.  The place was great and everyone thought it was worth     the trip up from Frederick.

 

   The group meets once a month for different activities.  September will be “sports” day.  We will play tennis, basketball, kickball, and participate in a 30-minute Zumba lesson.  In October we will go to a corn maze.  If you are interested in joining the group, please contact Carol Custer at 301-788-6198.

Keys Game Outing

Carol Custer Completes Legal Series on Educational Advocacy

Carol Custer, educational advocate from Frederick County, Maryland, recently completed the five-part Legal Series Webinars through COPAA (Council of Parents Attorneys and Advocates).  Carol heard from experts on several topics; including case law updates, Legal Claims for Bullying and Harassment,  Litigating Claims for Unlawful Retaliation and Interference with Rights,  Social Emotional Assessment: Meeting IDEA Requirements, and Section 504 eligibility.   Carol hopes to use this information to help her clients obtain the appropriate services from public school systems under IDEA and Section 504.  For information on advocacy services, please contact Carol at 301-788-6198 or at Carol@CusterLLC.com.

Young Adult Social Group Discusses Friendships & Cooks!

On December 5, the Teachable Moments Young Adult Social Group met at St. James Episcopal Church in Mt. Airy for cooking lessons and discussions about what makes a good friend and how to be a friend.  While half the group was making cupcakes or cookies in the kitchen with chefs Michael Harman and Angel, the other half was working with co-facilitators Sharon Helman and Carol Custer discussing friendship and relationship issues, including respect for yourself and others.  Sharon is the owner of wherewithal Speech & Language Services (304-839-5305).  Carol is the founder of the group and owner of Carol Custer, LLC, a company that provides a variety of educational services, including tutoring and advocacy.  Contact Carol at 301-788-6198 to learn more about this group that meets monthly.  There are many exciting outings planned for 2012.
