School in the Summer? Absolutely!

Posted on July 1, 2011 by Carol Custer

Tutoring article imageAs home-school parents, you probably know all of the tricks to keep your children learning without them knowing they are working. You are probably already planning to keep the learning going through the summer; but just in case you are thinking about easing up, let me tell you why that is not a good idea.

As a teacher, it was always heart-breaking to see how much my students forgot from June to September. I saw their reading scores drop, sometimes by over one grade level, and their recollection of basic math seemed to disappear. As a tutor, I am discouraged when parents stop their children’s sessions over the summer because I know that will mean these children will need more time to regain concepts they previously knew. Anything you do to keep your children’s minds active on school subjects will be beneficial. Read More→

May Social Group on Self-Defense a Success

Posted on May 18, 2011 by Carol Custer

The Young Adult Social Group met on May 16 at the Frederick YMCA.  Capt. Maybush and Cpl. Wilson presented information and strategies to the group on how to be safe and become aware of your environment in order to help avoid beginning a crime victim.  The group asked many questions and participated fully.  During the second half of the evening, Dan & Kim Spletter, YMCA karate instructors and some of their senior students and staff, came in to teach basic techniques to help members survive an attack.  Members practiced screaming at their attacker to, “GET AWAY!!!”  They practiced punches and other self-defense tactics.

After the instruction was finished, the group enjoyed time socializing and planning future outings.

The next meeting will be a picnic at Cunningham Falls State Park in June.  Any one interested in joining the group for that event should contact Carol Custer as soon as possible at 301-788-6198.
